At Miami-Dade Virtual School (MDVS), Exceptional Student Education (ESE) students on a modified curriculum receive individualized, high-touch online instruction tailored to their unique learning profiles. Core coursework is aligned with Florida’s B.E.S.T. Access Points, providing students with significant cognitive disabilities and meaningful access to general education concepts at reduced levels of complexity.
Instructional Model
- Access Point Curriculum: Lessons in English Language Arts, Math, Science, Social Studies, and Electives are adapted using Florida Access Points, breaking standards down into scaffolded, essential understandings that match each student’s developmental needs.
- Live Direct Support: Certified ESE teachers conduct real-time, interactive virtual sessions using visual aids, assistive technology, and adapted digital materials to deliver 1-on-1 and small-group instruction.
- Coursework: Coursework features chunked lessons, simplified readings, and multimodal content (video, audio, interactive applications) that allow students to process material at a comfortable, stress-free pace.
- IEP Accommodations: Speech-language therapy, Occupational therapy, Physical therapy, and other IEP-mandated services are integrated directly through virtual services.
- Virtual Environment: Low student to teacher ratio compared to in-person schooling, which allows for more 1-on-1 attention.
